First time exhibiter at the annual Malvern Show, Primrose Hospice were delighted to be awarded the best Show Garden as voted by the public in The People’s Choice Award against a total of nine other gardens in their category.

Designed by the award winning Martyn Wilson of Wilson Associates Garden Design and construction sponsored by Stourbridge based Kendrick Homes Limited, the theme of the garden was Time is a Healer.

By utilising a clever design Martyn was able to both provide a space for counselling the bereaved with a focus on children after losing a loved one and also build awareness of the work of Primrose Hospice and the many support services they offer to the community.

The space within the garden explored the journey that the bereaved travel and the mixture of emotions experienced in such a traumatic period and is symbolised by the central sculpture which is akin to a clock face with four exits, which enable the bereaved to enter and exit the garden at a ‘time’ that was right for them.

The planting explored the changing emotions of bereavement from periods of depression represented by dark foliage and flowers, moving to a mixed palette of colours representing confused emotions.

And a calming palette of greens and whites for those who reach peace and acceptance and hedging and trees also offered a sense of enclosure.

The bespoke central sculpture and benches crafted by local artists offer opportunities for discussion or quiet thought.

Helen Briscoe, Chief Executive of Primrose Hospice commented, “We are all absolutely delighted with our awards, particularly as it is the first year we have taken part and the garden has certainly helped us to raise our profile.

“In addition to The Peoples Choice Award we were also awarded a Bronze Medal by the Royal Horticultural Society.”

James Rennison, Managing Director at Kendrick Homes commented, “Kendrick Homes feel very privileged to have be given the opportunity to offer our support to Primrose Hospice. This essential service and support they provide is exceptional especially when you consider it relies almost solely on charitable donations to deliver their services.”
