With mischievous fairies, ghostly guests and a ghost hunt that ended rather less dramatically than expected, Worcestershire has plenty of stories to get you into the Halloween spirit.
This autumn, we’re adding a welcoming new chapter with our Open Weekend on Saturday 31 October and Sunday 1 November. Join us at Ambridge Fields in Inkberrow, Cygnets Rest in Drakes Broughton and Severn Meadows in Upton-upon-Severn for Prosecco, nibbles and a look around our homes. Reserve during the weekend and you’ll receive a tailored package worth up to £10,000.
And because every neighbourhood has its stories, we’ve uncovered a few curious tales from the surrounding area.
Inkberrow’s mischievous midnight builders
An old Inkberrow folk tale tells of fairies who were rather unhappy when the village church was being rebuilt on a new site close to their home. According to the story, they carried the building materials back to the original site each night, undoing the builders’ work.
The church eventually prevailed, but the fairies were said to complain about the ringing bells disturbing their peace. Recorded in historic collections of Worcestershire folklore, it’s a charming glimpse into the village’s storytelling past.
Today, a visit to Ambridge Fields offers the chance to discover a new home in this characterful village, with our team ready to show you around and talk through your next move.
A ghost hunt near Drakes Broughton — with an unexpected ending
Nearby Pershore has its own entertaining brush with the supernatural. A newspaper report from September 1937, reproduced by Mysterious Britain, describes how strange noises around the monastery ruins beside Pershore Abbey prompted local ghost hunters to keep watch through the early hours.
Their patience went unrewarded. Instead of a ghostly apparition, the watchers heard animal cries and the wind in the trees, eventually giving up and heading home. Even the most determined ghost hunters couldn’t persuade their elusive subject to make an appearance.
There’s considerably less waiting involved at Cygnets Rest in Drakes Broughton, where our Open Weekend is an opportunity to explore the homes, get a feel for the development and picture everyday life here.
Upton’s guest who may never have checked out
In Upton-upon-Severn, ghost lore surrounding the White Lion Hotel includes the celebrated actress Sarah Siddons, whose spirit is said to wander the building. It remains a local legend rather than a verified haunting, but the thought of a theatrical guest making an occasional encore feels rather fitting for Halloween.
If you’re exploring the town over the weekend, visit Severn Meadows to discover our homes and speak to the team about finding the right one for you.
